This is a sculptural piece representing the change of the sublime into beauty. Glass is a perfect material for the expression of calm as it is inherently beautiful and can relate itself well to expressions of tranquillity. It is also perfect for the sublime as it has an element of risk to it. Glass blowing on this scale could almost be considered sublime, the use of glass to show that out of something sublime can come beauty! It is thought that the word sublime means anything so beautiful as to take your breath away. Although this could be said to be true in part, it is not true as a whole. Beauty has very little to do with the word. In fact some philosophers would argue that beauty is the opposite of sublime and that beauty is not a strong enough emotion to be classed in the reasons for the sublime. So the aim is a sculpture that is an opposite of the sublime and shows beauty and calm, but with a reference to the sublime.
